The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised the alarm that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is saturated by all kinds of armed robbers and criminals including hardened armed kidnappers but there seems to be no synergy among the armed security services to bring this frightening reality to an end.
The rights group condemned the fact that the FCT Police Command and all other security agencies that ought to concentrate on combating crimes in the nation’s capital are posted to houses of very important persons thereby making crime fighting a herculean task for the few demotivated operatives who are found in some rickety police operational vehicles and unkempt police posts stations.
The rights group regretted the fact that residents of such satellite towns like Kuje, Bwari and Gwagwalada are daily made to confront the men of the underworld with little or no efforts on the side of the police and other law enforcement agencies within the FCT to effectively introduce measures to combat these crimes and criminality.
HURIWA recalled that early in February, the police in Abuja, confirmed the abduction of John Makama, father of Bwari Area Council Chairman, John Gabaya. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the divisional police officer (DPO) in charge of Bwari Police Station, Biodun Makanjuola, said the incident took place around 1:00 a.m.on Tuesday, adding that the police were still gathering details of what actually happened
The Rights group recalled also that on the 5 th of February 2021,gunmen abducted a PUNCH reporter, Okechukwu Nnodim, at his house in the Arab Road area of Kubwa, Abuja.

The kidnappers also attacked his neighbours and went away with the two sons of a widow, Mrs Faith Gbeyide.
The rights group similarly said that around the same February this year a retired Assistant Comptroller of Immigration, Alhaji Abdulahi Idris Rakieu, was kidnapped in Abuja alongside his wife, another member of the family, and one Olushola Agun. It was learnt that the kidnappers, said to be of Fulani extraction, stormed the town, Tungan Maje around midnight on Sunday, and shot indiscriminately into the air before gaining access into the victims’ residence. Within the same period under review, unknown gunmen abducted one person and injured three others in Pegi community in Abuja. The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m on a Friday when the victims were returning home from work.
HURIWA stated that on JUNE 25th 2021,gunmen abducted seven persons after they attacked Hilltop Hotel in the FCT. According to media information the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 10:30 p.m. just as earlier in March 2021 a seven-man gang of armed robbers attacked a private school in Kafe, Life Camp area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, robbing the proprietor and the teachers.
It was learnt that the robbers, who struck earlier in the week, went away with laptops, money and other valuables.
HURIWA recalled also that on May 9th 2021 a gang of armed robbers reportedly attacked the residences of Agboola Gambari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari and an Admin Officer, Abubakar Maikano within the premises of the Presidential Villa, Aso-Rock, Abuja.
The incident which occurred on May 9th, reportedly caused both Gambari and Maikano to temporarily abandon their residences.
Around January 24th, 2021 it was reported that barely 24 hours after operatives of the police-led anti-kidnapping Joint Taskforce, JTF, were withdrawn, bandits struck an orphanage in the Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, abducting at least eight orphans and three others. On Jan 5th 2021, Kidnappers reportedly abducted two wives of Idris Mohammed, coucillor representing Gwako ward in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT and three others.
The rights group condemned the lack of decisive and effective measures by security operatives and the political authority in the federal capital territory.
